Free RPGs Worth Exploring

Story-driven MMOs, action RPGs and gacha adventures that respect your time.

Story first

STAR WARS: The Old Republic offers eight fully voiced class stories, and free players can complete the original campaigns without paying. It is the strongest pick for anyone who values narrative over endgame systems. Expect some inconvenience restrictions unless you subscribe.

Combat first

Lost Ark's isometric combat is flashy and responsive, and its raids are among the most dramatic in any MMO. Torchlight: Infinite strips things back to fast map clearing and build experimentation. Zenless Zone Zero brings character-action combat with dodges and parries to a gacha format.

Long-term progression

MapleStory has been running for two decades and offers dozens of classes. Its depth is real, but so is the grind, and enhancement items in the cash shop can speed progress considerably.

Understanding the trade-offs

Free RPGs fund themselves through boosts, cosmetics, gacha draws or subscriptions. Before committing, read how characters and gear are obtained. If a game's most important items come from random draws, set a personal budget early, or decide to play entirely free and enjoy the parts that need no spending.
