Understanding Free-to-Play Monetization

Battle passes, gacha, subscriptions and loot boxes explained plainly.

Cosmetics

The most player-friendly model sells skins, emotes and other visual items that do not affect gameplay. Counter-Strike 2, Team Fortress 2 and Overwatch rely heavily on this approach, though Counter-Strike's cases add a random element.

Battle passes

A battle pass offers a free reward track and a paid premium track that you unlock by playing during a season. They provide good value for regular players but create pressure to log in frequently.

Gacha and loot boxes

Gacha games such as Zenless Zone Zero, Limbus Company and Infinity Nikki sell randomised draws for characters or items. Published odds and 'pity' systems guarantee a reward after a set number of draws. Because outcomes are random, it is easy to spend more than intended; decide on limits in advance.

Subscriptions and expansions

Some games, like The Old Republic and DC Universe Online, offer optional subscriptions that remove restrictions. Others, such as The Sims 4 and Destiny 2, give away a base game and sell expansions. Free access never means every paid pack is included.
