PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS popularised the modern battle royale when it launched in 2017, and it moved to free-to-play in January 2022. Compared with flashier rivals, it remains more grounded, favouring realistic ballistics and slow-burning tension.

Gameplay

Up to 100 players parachute onto a large map, scavenge for weapons, armour and attachments, and fight as a shrinking blue zone forces them together. Bullets have travel time and drop, vehicles cover long distances, and sound plays a huge role in spotting enemies.

World and atmosphere

Maps range from the Eastern European fields of Erangel to the desert of Miramar and the snowy Vikendi. Each map changes engagement distances and pacing, so the same match plan rarely works everywhere.

Free content and limitations

The base game, all maps and core modes are free. A one-time Battlegrounds Plus upgrade adds ranked access and some extra perks. Cosmetic passes, crates and skins are sold separately and do not affect weapon stats.

Verdict

PUBG is still the battle royale for players who prefer realism over spectacle. Its slower rhythm will not suit everyone, but few games match the tension of a final circle.
