Released in 2007 and free-to-play since 2011, Team Fortress 2 is Valve's cartoonish class-based shooter. Its exaggerated art style, inspired by mid-century illustration, has helped it age far better than most games of its era.
Players choose from nine classes split into offence, defence and support. A Scout dashes and double-jumps, a Heavy shreds with a minigun, an Engineer builds sentries and teleporters, and a Medic heals and charges invulnerability. Modes include Payload, where a cart is escorted along tracks, Capture the Flag and King of the Hill.
Two rival companies, RED and BLU, hire mercenaries to fight over industrial outposts. Valve built the lore through comics and the much-loved 'Meet the Team' short films, giving every class a distinct voice and personality.
All classes, maps and modes are free. Free accounts have limits on trading, chat and some item features until a purchase is made in the Mann Co. Store. Hats, taunts and other cosmetics are optional and largely tradable.
Team Fortress 2 remains a joyful, personality-driven shooter. It is rough around the edges in places, yet its class design is still a masterclass in how to make teamwork fun.
